the void and the object that fills the void

The real goal of art, from a personal perspective as an artist, is to heal. It is a process, method or technique, whatever you wish to call it, of raising consciousness, for the artist in the process of creation and/ or for the viewer in contemplation, to bring us back to this moment.
How does one define art? Well, thats the age old question with as many answers as there are people. The only way I have managed to define it for myself is as an expression done with love. If it is not engaged with in love then it almost invariably comes from the ego, again a very tricky word to define outside an intuitive, but nevertheless words are what we have in the realm of putting the wordless into words.
It is about returning to the sacred, something culturally we have almost forgoten completely. It is about treating our world, and all life, with respect. And so taking a healthy animal, taking its life for no real purpose and submerging it into a glass container full of toxic chemicals for the sake of spectacle and money,or maybe more pointedly greed, wounds us all. It seems an act of ignorance that we celebrate, not one of courage or integrity or love. And so when the crowd applaud, it takes courage to stand up and question the act and the intention. The needless waste of the gifts of nature on a smaller scale are what is being questioned, that is what the critic is doing. It is a call to wake up from the addiction of distraction, a painful experience in the short term, yet it will save us much future suffering if we have the courage now. That is the path of the true artist, the true critic is one who understands and tries in his or her own way to support this path.
